What is in that number: take the door down, pull hardware, degrease, scuff, prime bare wood or stain-blocked faces, two coats of waterborne enamel, rehang, and adjust the latch. When does paint fail as the answer?

• The door rubs the floor after a humid week. That is a slab or hinge problem.
• Veneer is peeling. Enamel will not glue it back.
• A bathroom door has swollen at the bottom rail. Moisture got in. Paint will not shrink it.
• You want a different size or a pocket door. That is carpentry.

How do you paint interior doors so they still close?

Take them down. Prime any bare wood. Two finish coats of enamel, not wall paint. Light sand between coats. Rehang and check the strike.
